Production of the C8 Corvette is finally getting up to speed, 8,500 mid-engine Chevrolet Corvettes have been built!

While circumstances beyond the plant’s control have hampered and delayed production of the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette, it looks like the mid-engined C8 is finally seeing some light at the end of that production line tunnel. A new report says that total production has topped 8,500 and that the second shift is getting ready to get going. The report from Corvette Blogger says that this past Tuesday workers built 100 cars, with a VIN range from 8,453 to 8,553. While that sequential VIN figure likely includes some prototypes and production proof cars, it suggests that the Bowling Green, KY, plant has now put together more than 8,500 C8 Corvettes and counting. With a strike at GM last year pushing production back several months, followed by a shutdown and slowdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Corvette production has fallen multiple months behind. So far that thousands of owners were moved from a 2020 model year car to 2021 and 2020 orders closed early. Convertibles are now being built, and the report says that adding the more complex vehicle slowed down the line, which is currently working 10-hour shifts. It also says that sources with inside the factory information have said that the second shift of workers is currently being trained alongside day shift workers as their original training was pre-pandemic shutdown. No start date was given, but expect it as soon as next week. Once the second shift comes online at the Chevrolet plant, production should increase to double or more, though supply chain disruptions, as well as workers absent due to illness caused by COVID, are still hampering the Corvette efforts, as they are with much of auto production around the world. So if you’re waiting for your C8, the wait times could be shrinking, but worker safety and product quality remain paramount. Post by Evan Williams, MOTOR ILLUSTRATED, 8/27/20
